The values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs are promoted across the school through the delivery of our curriculum and specific sessions to develop pupils’ social and emotional understanding.
Democracy
Children have many opportunities for their voices to be heard. They are always listened to by adults and are taught to listen carefully and with concern to each other, respecting the right of every individual to have their opinions and voices heard.
Children have the opportunity to air their opinions and ideas through our School Council. The elections of the School Council members are based solely on pupil votes, reflecting our British electoral system and demonstrating democracy in action.
Rule of Law
The importance of the supportive framework of laws in which we live and thrive is consistently reinforced.
We have three school rules, which are embedded in our work every day:
- Ready
- Respectful
- Safe
Children are taught the value and reasons behind the school rules, that they are there for our well-being; the responsibilities that this entails and the consequences when rules are broken.
Individual Liberty
Children are actively encouraged to make and manage choices, within a safe and supportive environment. We provide the boundaries and structure for our children to make choices safely, through the provision of a safe environment and an empowering education.
Children are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and are advised how to exercise these safely; for example, through e-safety and Jigsaw lessons.
Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs
Pupils are provided with frequent opportunities to understand the value of diversity in school and the wider community. Assemblies are held regularly and centre celebrations from a variety of faiths and cultures. This is reinforced by teaching of RE and PSHCE, designed to allow children to develop an enhanced understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society.
